My teaching experiences
I began to teach in 2004 until now. I used to teach in English courses places such as in Britania and Green Country Rahmatul Asri Enrekang. I am an instructor in Up Grading. Teaching in English course and in English camps are quite different. If we teach in English course we have to refer to the given method and approach from the leader while in English camp, instructor is the decision maker of the method and approach which will be used in running the program.
In my teaching experiences, I usually used the four integrated skill and communicative approach. For example, in Britania, I brought my students to the language laboratory. There, I played them a western song and I give them a piece of paper which contains the lyric of that song. After that I asked them to give comment about the topic of that song. Sometimes I played my students a cassette which contains an English conversation. Then, I asked them to write down what they listened from that conversation. Next, I asked them to explain what the conversation talked about. Here, I can say that I had integrated the four skills; listening, speaking, reading, writing.
In English camp, for example in the program professional meeting, I use communicative approach. This program has some items such as opening speech which will be presented by the host, self-introduction, continue story, discussion, and closing speech. I will choose one of my students to be the MC and one as the host of the meeting and one as the first teller of continue story. After choosing the MC, I hand over the meeting to the MC and I will pay close attention to my students’ speaking and find out the error of their speaking, so that, the students will be more talkative in joining the meeting. In the discussion item, MC will hand over the meeting to the instructor and the instructor will handle the discussion for about 30 to 40 minutes. After discussion, the instructor hand over once again the meeting to the MC and then close the program. From here, the writer bravely says that this communicative approach and integrated skills are two things which influence the students’ competence especially in improving their English. It can be concluded that English can be learnt by students gladly if the method and approach which used by the teacher or the instructor make the students feel happy and comfortable and also think that English is fun to be learnt. So as the teacher, we may not plant in students’ mind that English is difficult, but we have to invite them and make them embittered to learn more and more about English. And since 2009 until now, I am teaching and being a lecturer in Faculty of Letters of Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) Makassar.
