There are two great scientists who investigate semiotics. They are Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) and Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914).
Saussure was a linguist, while Peirce was a philosopher. Saussure used semiology term (European Continental system), while Peirce used Semiotics term (American system and Anglo-Saxon System). But in the subsequent developments, semiotic term is the most popular (Ratna, 2004: 98-99).
The word ‘semiotic’ comes from Greek ‘seme’ which is meant ‘interpretation of sign’ (Cobley and Jansz, 2002: 4). Another literature says that semiotic comes from the word ‘semeion’ which is meant ‘sign’ (Sudjiman and Van Zoest, 1996: vii).
According to Eco (Ratna, 2004: 105), semiotic relates to everything which has relationship with signs. Then according to Charles Sanders Peirce (Sobur, 2004: 16), semiotic is “a relationship among a sign, an object, and a meaning.”
Cobley and Jansz, (2002: 4) state Semiotic as:
“Discipline is simply the analysis signs or the study of the functioning of signs systems”.
Thus, semiotics is a study about analysis of signs.
