The old custom house in Karampuang, the custom area in Sinjai regency, is believed to have existed since the 17th century and functioned as the palace for Arung or the highest leader of Karampuang community. Actually, there are two custom houses, Toma Toa is the palace for Arung while another one is for Gella. Both of it were build in Built in Buginese architecture.
Karampuang indigenous region had been led by a woman in the past time, so as to make the population of matrilineal societies. As it is illustrated in the form of the Arung house.
This Arung house is a symbol of woman’s body. The jutting pole is a picture of the shoulder, the ornaments at the top of the house is made to resemble earrings, and placed under precarious.
A place that is arguably most resembles the woman’s body is the entrance to the house which is located right in the middle of the house. It is between the two poles, there is an angle and it is shaped like a hole. The door symbolizes the female genital.
The door means as ‘rose door’, where for the first human being come to this world and take a breath. The entrance is called batu lappa. As the door position is flat and flush with the floor of the house, then the way to open it, must be pushed upward or pushed forward to shift ballast bound by the door.
