Government Structure in Karampuang, Sinjai
Entering the customs area of Karampuang in Sinjai, we have to follow a ritual that is performed by taking a stone and a leaf which is then placed in the position of stones piled on top of the leaf.
This ritual is meaningful respect for people or rulers who are not tangible or visible supernatural others. While the stone signifies a tribute to the human authorities that local customs administration.
Karampuang as the custom are in Sinjai, runs a government system like a country. There are four traditional leaders in Karampuang, they are; Arung, Gella, Sanro and Guru. If we compare it to a structural government, Arung is a kind of president or king, Gella as prime minister , Sanro as well as Guru are the ministers.
In Karampuang, this governance structure is known as Ade Eppa'e (four custom leaders). In their decision making, it has always held a consultation which is reflected in the message "eppa alliri Pattepona Wanuae" or four poles of the country. Arung is indigenous leader in Karampuang who most entitled to stay at the old custom house called Toma Toa.
He is highly respected. Gella lives not far from Toma Toa. When Arung is the king, then Gella is like a prime minister who is responsible about the law and justice in Karampuang. Guru and Sanro have the same duties related to spiritual. If a Sanro is a woman, she will take care of spiritual matters related to customs, while Guru deals with spiritual matters related to the implementation of Islamic holidays. It is because of course in Islam, the leader of Islamic tradition should be a man.
