Mappogau Sihanua, Karampuang's Custom Ceremony [Part.1]


One should be there in our tourism agenda if we go to Sinjai. It is the traditional village called Karampuang. This traditional village has a ritual ceremony namely Mappogau Sihanua, which is held every year and always attended by thousands visitors from anywhere as it is deemed as one of the ritual activities in expressing the thankful upon their success in harvesting.

The traditional ceremony is carried out for one week. During the ceremony, various attractions are also presented. The peak ceremony is conducted in the top of Karampuang Mountain. The harvest ceremony or Mappogau Sihanua has been done before or after harvesting. The purpose in holding the ritual ceremony is to thank full for the God who has given the community the good harvest that moment.

In the implementation of custom ceremony of Mappogau Sihanua, it was led by Sanro (an executive leader who runs the ritual in Karampuang society). In the event Manre Ase Baru or in English we can call it eat new rice, as one of a series of custom ceremony Mappogau Sihanua , the first who come down from the traditional house Toma Toa is Sanro with white clothes and gloves. Then, she will be followed by a girl wearing white clothes too.

When Sanro come down from Toma Toa, traditional house of Karampuang community, then Sanro and the followers make their way to the top of the Karampuang hill where the procession of Mappogau Sihanua will take place. After arriving at the top of the rocky hill, it should be noted that before arriving at the rocky terrain with contour, a few meters before the pointed big stone, we have to open our slippers or sandals. This is one of the customary rules that must be followed when participating in this procession.

The ceremony procession begins with Sanro asking citizens who joining the procession around the big stone to bring their offerings, such as; goats, chickens, crops, and so on to get closer to the circle of the pointed stone that had been paired shade of a white cloth on it. It will be here, Sanro will do the custom ceremony Mappogau Sihanua procession. When the rituals begin, no one makes a noise and they take a place around the stone where Sanro prays with a state of calm and quiet.

After the rituals ended, then chickens and goats which are offered before, released and became seizure for all the community who join the procession. Thus, the course of ceremonial procession of Mappogau Sihanua as the sharing results from several friends who have covered in indigenous village, Karampuang , Sinjai.
