Wala Suji in Bugis-Makassar Culture Today

For the Bugis-Makassar society, Wala Suji is used to be as a benchmark to measure the level of perfection that is owned by someone. As mentioned in the previous post, the perfection here means courage, nobility, wealth, and good looks.

Today, it is proved that Wala Suji is not a rare thing anymore. It is due to the reality that nowadays we can find it anywhere, even if there is no marriage ceremony. Indeed, Wala Suji only used at the wedding or traditional party for residents of South Sulawesi society who still adhere to local customs. But now, even after the party, the Wala Suji has become a permanent gateway to the homes of local noble descent in Bugis-Makassar society. It is due to a pity to destroy Wala Suji after the party, in which of making it, it spent much money. Besides, it also gives another additional function by placing it in front of the house, that is, as a gate to be a shelter from the hot of the sun or pouring rain in the rainy season.

In Bugis-Makassar society nowadays, its function is added or even changed by putting or making a long bench of bamboo or wood on the left and right bottom side of Wala Suji, as a place to relax and to hang out. Even a number of restaurants or luxury hotels in Makassar, also put Wala Suji in food core location by putting it near a buffet or a dish in the room. It is also done to introduce one of the works of art and culture of South Sulawesi to the guest who come and visit South Sulawesi and stay in that hotel.
