The Link Between Saussure & Peirce's Signs in Semiotics

The relationship between signifier and signified as the signs mentioned by Ferdinand de Saussure in his theory of signs (semiology) can be connected to the signs mentioned by C.S.Peirce (icon, index, symbol). Then the relation between signs from these two experts can be seen as it is explained by Atmazaki (1990:77) in three forms, as follows:
1. Signifier is a description of the direct meaning from signified (icon), such like photo.
2. Signifier is the result (causal relation) from the signifier (index), such as smoke from the fire.
3. Signifier is not the result, the cause or the direct description from signified, but something which related conventionally and arbitrary (symbol).

Related to this post, in the next post we will post and talk about the sign’s relation to the theory of denotation and connotation found by Rolland Barthes and its relation to semiotics theory as some references also mentioned that he is also a father of semiotics besides Saussure and Peirce.
